DID YOU KNOW...
3 STYLES AMONG TODAY'S BRIDES

There are essentially three 'styles' among today's brides:
1) The traditional "princess bride" -- a young woman whose parents are active in the planning and financing of their daughter's once-in-a-lifetime, fairy-tale wedding;
2) "Traditional independent bride" -- she is financially independent and plans her own wedding (sometimes along with the groom). She blends tradition with her own style; and
3) "Non-traditional independent brides" - typically marry later or were perhaps previously married; she plans a small, nontraditional wedding.

ALMOST ANYTHING GOES ...
THE 5 MOST POPULAR WEDDING DRESSES TODAY ARE:

1. Full bodice, long sleeves, full length - this one is the most traditional design, but a bride can make her dress unique through a combination of different fabrics.

2. 'Off the shoulder - these wedding dresses expose one shoulder, but are otherwise still classic designs.

3. Strapless - wedding dresses with no straps at all (or 'spaghetti' straps, which are practically no straps at all!) have become popular in the last decade.

4. Embroidered - usually with a contrasting color. Burgundy, navy blue and even black are some of the contrasting colors being used.

5. Historic - many brides are opting for Victorian or 'antique-look' wedding dresses today, incorporating elements of designs that go back as much as 300 years.

A WEDDING WISH

All earthly goods
I wish thee.
All that's good for
thee and thine
And still, not
only earthly
But all we know
to be divine.

May earth and
heaven mingle
May earth and
heaven be one
All through your
earthly journey
Till sets your
earthly sun.

In Sunshine and
in shadow
Through dancing and
in song
May heaven bless
your union
Throughout your
whole life long.

MARRIAGE LICENSES

In addition to your Arizona state license (information below), we provide you a beautiful keepsake marriage certificate suitable for framing.

Remember to bring your marriage license to your ceremony - you may obtain one in Phoenix, Cottonwood or Flagstaff.

Arizona is a wedding-friendly state; no residency is required and there is no waiting period after you obtain your marriage licenss. Valid for one year from the date of issue, couples must obtain in person (licenses are processed in about twenty minutes) and are valid for one year from the date of issue.

There is a $72.00 Fee - please contact the Court of Clerk's office before you go and inquire as to what method of payment they accept. Most take cash or check only. Couples can obtain either a standard marriage license or a covenant marriage license (read details on Arizona's covenant marriage licenses).

Two witnesses (at least eighteen years of age) must "witness" the wedding and sign the marriage license after the ceremony.

Clerk Court Offices nearest to Sedona:  Please note their hours of operation - they are only open Mon. - Fri. 8 - 5 p.m. (MST) and are closed on weekends and holidays.

WHAT TYPE OF WEDDING CEREMONY DO YOU WANT?

Determining your type of wedding ceremony is one of the first decisions you and your new partner will have to make. It's easy if you have similar religious backgrounds, but if not, you need to both be happy and comfortable with the wedding ceremony choice you make.

TYPES OF WEDDING CEREMONIES

Traditional Religious -
Trinity Unity between you, your spouse and God/Creator

Pagan or Hand-Fasting Ceremony -
Four directions, animal totems, prayers and sacred chants

New Age or Aquarius Age Ceremony -
Spiritual deities, fairies, angels, mystical elements abound!

Native American themed traditional blanket ceremony -
Cherokee Indian Tribal ceremony

Sedona destination weddings and vow renewals

1. Religious. By far the most common of the wedding ceremonies, a religious wedding ceremony, is still really popular. It becomes a 'problem' only if you and your intended are of different faiths, but many churches are working together now to help inter-faith couples marry. Depending on your chosen church, it's even possible to have two officiates marry you at the same time. The best thing to do is to check with your minister, priest or rabbi and find out what the options are, and then discuss it. You may need to work on one of your first compromises - picking the best of both worlds to create something truly unique to you!

2. Civil. A civil wedding ceremony is one in which a Justice of the Peace, a judge, or a 'Marriage Commissionaire' is hired to marry you, outside of a church. These people are appointed by the state (or in Canada, the province). They will have some scripts you can choose from to say your vows. Even though this sounds cold and impersonal, a civil wedding ceremony can be large and formal, or small; indoors or out - and every bit as romantic and elegant as a religious wedding ceremony.

3. Military. If you or your partner is in the military (or retired after serving), you may be entitled to a full military wedding ceremony. This ceremony often takes place in the military chapel, but can sometimes be arranged for outdoors or elsewhere, too. The military person will dress in appropriate uniform (whites in the summer, dark for winter). Officers will sometimes carry a sword, and an 'arch of swords' is sometimes formed for the new couple to walk through on their exit. Non-military guests at a military wedding ceremony dress in traditional attire, usually formal.

4. Non-traditional. A non-traditional wedding ceremony is similar to a civil one, but may have religious overtones if you as a couple, or one of you, is a member of a 'non-traditional' religion. You may have an officiate recognized by your organization who is qualified to marry you, and your wedding ceremony may contain some religious elements.

A non-traditional wedding ceremony gives you the most leeway to 'do your own thing' at your wedding - you can be as creative as your imaginations will allow!

WHAT IS A DESTINATION WEDDING?

Destination weddings are growing in leaps and bounds with so many couples choosing non-traditional location and elements to suit a growing need for emotional expansion in today's more mature relationships. It's true! A destination wedding is NOT in your back yard or your local church, or even your home town! A destination wedding is one that, literally, you have to travel to get to - and there are some great reasons to have one, and great choices of destinations, too!

COMBINE YOUR WEDDING & HONEYMOON IN AN EXOTIC LOCATION

Other than two witnesses, a destination wedding typically does not include many guests and witnesses can be found at your destination if you don't have a preference. Today, many couples are deciding to combine their wedding and their honeymoon in exotic locations that they may otherwise been unable to afford or they have just saved around $20,000 or much more by not having a large local wedding.

WEDDING OMENS, CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS

Good Omens

seeing a rainbow
having the sun shine
meeting a black cat
meeting a chimney sweep

Lucky in Love

A bride is lucky if she wears old shoes.
If a cat sneezes on the day before a wedding, the bride will be lucky in her marriage.
If you see a rainbow on your wedding day, it is a good sign.
If you see a black cat on your wedding day, it is a good sign.
Wearing pearls: this is one of those wedding myths with both bad luck and good luck meanings. The ominous version of this myth holds that pearls represent future tears; thus wearing them will bring many tears and heartache in the marriage. The luckier version of this implies that the pearls take the place of the bride's real tears, thus she'll have a happy, tear-free wedding.
Tears on the wedding day: it is considered good luck for the bride to cry during her wedding. She will have cried all her tears away leaving none for the marriage. Another theory holds that a bride's tears are good luck as they bring rain for the crops.
Rain on the wedding day: this is another good luck - bad luck wedding myth. In the good luck version, rain is said to foretell the coming of children just as rain promotes growth in the farmer's fields. In the unlucky version, rain drops represent the many tears a bride will cry throughout her marriage.

A young bride would wear her hair long and loose as a symbol of her youth and innocence.

It was OK for a woman to propose to a man during a leap year.

If the groom drops the ring during the ceremony, the marriage is doomed.

If a single woman sleeps with a piece of wedding cake under her pillow, she will dream of her future husband.

Something old,
Something new,
Something borrowed,
Something blue,
And a lucky sixpence
In her shoe.

Married in White, you have chosen right
Married in Grey, you will go far away,
Married in Black, you will wish yourself back,
Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead,
Married in Green, ashamed to be seen,
Married in Blue, you will always be true,
Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl,
Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow,
Married in Brown, you will live in the town,
Married in Pink, you spirit will sink.

APACHE WEDDING PRAYER BLESSING

Now you will feel no rain
For each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now each of you will feel no cold
For each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no loneliness for you
For each of you will be companion to the other.
Now you are two persons
But there is one life before you.
Go now to your dwelling place to enter into the days of your togetherness
And may your days be good and long upon the earth.
